Reading the diagram

The top row is the path your traffic takes: your device, the network that carries it, and the wider internet. The address shown is what every site you visit sees.

Underneath are the DNS resolvers that answered on your behalf. Those are the machines that know which sites you asked for — which is why they matter as much as your IP address does.

What a DNS leak means

DNS turns a name like example.com into an address. On a VPN, those lookups should stay inside the encrypted tunnel.

When they don't, your traffic is still encrypted but the list of every domain you visit is not — it goes to your ISP, or whoever runs the resolver that answered. If the resolvers above belong to your ISP rather than your VPN, that is a leak.
